Media Effects is a term ascribed the prolific body of research concerned with identifying a link between media content and behavior in viewers

It is obvious today as it was decades ago that the media effect theory has little going for it as an explanation to human behavior which I believe Lasswell and the others who propounded the theory would agree to if were around today
I personally do not think the media can cause people to take certain action all because it was mediated by it, even though I admit it can influence peoples decisions and perceptions, I can not accept the theory as affecting human behavior, rather the media researchers should explore other areas of media and its effects on the masses rather than blaming peoples actions as caused by the media

functions of the media

The functions of the media can be grouped into Economic, Political and Social Cultural.


Political Function:
  • The media function politically by offering constructive criticisms that provide solutions
  • They Investigate
  • act as gate keepers of public opinion
  • They also serve as watchdogs by helping to safeguard the right of the people from being trampled upon by the powerful.
Economic function
  • The media serves as means of creating employment for most people like Journalist, Reporters, Media technicians Security Official etc. not forgetting the news paper venders who also depend on the media for their source of income.
Social Cultural Function
  • The media disseminate information
  • They Educate
  • Entertain
  • They also Serve as links
  • Set social agendas
  • Influence opinions in society
  • The Media create awareness by campaigning for or against issues of public interest, they also make the public aware of issues on matters arising which needs to know.
